Summer is almost here, and that means showing skin is in. Admittedly this also means hair removal appointments. Thankfully, this does not have to mean that things have to be hectic thanks to running back and forth to weekly wax appointments. Instead, you can opt for laser hair removal treatment sessions. Admittedly, lasering your hair with the type of laser hair treatments that we offer will require hair removal preparation.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Works?

Laser hair removal works by using lasers to target the root of the hair follicle by locating the pigment found there using laser wavelengths. The wavelengths emitted by the lasers absorb the light and destroy the hair follicle without damaging the surface of the skin. Importantly, laser treatment targets each hair follicle.

Targeting each follicle results in needing more than one laser hair treatment sessions. This is due largely to the fact that each strand of hair has its growth cycle. As such, not all the strands will grow at the same time to the point where the laser can pick up on the pigment in the follicle root. It is recommended that multiple laser treatment sessions scheduled eight to 10 weeks apart are undergone. This is what is required for permanent removal.

5 Things To Do Before Each Laser Hair Removal Treatment Session

As intimated prior, there are certain steps that you can take to prepare yourself and your skin for laser hair removal. By taking these steps, you will ensure that you have little to no side-effects from the treatment. So, here it goes. Let’s get started.

1. Shave. Stop Plucking and Waxing

Shaving 24 to 48 hours before your laser hair treatment is recommended. However, plucking and waxing are not. This is because shaving does not get to the root of the hair, but instead leaves it in place. As such, the laser can target the pigment at the root of the hair. The opposite is true, however, where plucking and waxing are considered. Additionally, shaving allows you to decrease the likelihood of being burned by laser treatment.

2. Avoid Direct Exposure to the Sun

In addition to shaving and avoiding waxing and plucking hairs, it is also recommended that you avoid direct exposure to the sun, tanning beds, and self-tanners. Obviously, you cannot avoid going outside for two weeks sometimes. In such instances, be sure to use a sunscreen with a high enough SPF as well as protective clothing like pants, tops with sleeves, and so forth.

The failure to take these sorts of precautions can result in sunburn that can cause excessive blistering and pains as well as possible skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation post laser hair removal.

3. Don’t Bleach Your Hair

As stated prior, lasering your hair relies on detecting the pigment at the root of the hair follicle. The act of bleaching your hair is counterproductive to this process. In other words, bleaching your hair will make the hair harder to target and hair removal unsuccessful. Be sure to stop bleaching our hair at least six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment.

4. Don’t Use Anything on the Treatment Areas of the Skin

Makeup, creams, lotions, oils, and other such topical additives are a normal part of our daily lives. However, when attending your treatment sessions, the skin is to be cleaned, and nothing added to the skin – not even deodorants if you are doing the removal in the underarm areas. Cleansing all relevant areas with soap and water will suffice.

5. Check Medications

Some medications can have an adverse effect on the laser hair removal treatment process or make the process less effective in its goal of permanent hair removal. This includes both oral and topical medications. It is important to speak with your laser treatment professional and state the medications you are currently taking. This is particularly important if you are taking birth control, antibiotics, acne, and photosensitizing medications.

Certain medications can cause the skin to be more sensitive than usual and more susceptible to burns and hyperpigmentation. While you may not need to completely stop taking any medication you may be on, letting your laser hair treatment professional know what you are taking will allow them to adjust your treatment – thereby ensuring that they minimize any adverse effects and keep the process as safe as is possible for you.

There you have it! Your concise guide to making the most of your laser hair removal treatment. Following these guidelines will help make the process a safer, smoother, and more effective one for you.
